New to Zoom?

Click here for a 9 minute video on how to install Zoom on a PC and join a meeting for the first time.

To install Zoom:

If you are using a desktop or laptop (Windows/Mac) you can download Zoom by going to https://zoom.us/download . From the Download Centre click on the Download button under 'Zoom Client For Meetings'. Once the download is complete proceed with installing Zoom onto your computer.

If you are using a mobile device:
  • for Android devices go the Play Store and download the app 'Zoom Cloud Meeting'
  • for iPad/iPhone devices go to the App Store and download the app 'Zoom Cloud Meeting'

If you open a Zoom account use your email address and a new password rather than your email password or your Facebook or Google account.

2020 AGM

The AGM scheduled for 18 March was postponed because of the increasing risk from COVID-19. Given that we are now in Lock-down mode for at least 4 weeks it is not possible to physically meet to hold the AGM during April so the Executive Committee has decided to hold one remotely.

The AGM will be held online at 11am on Wednesday 15 April using Zoom, a video conferencing tool that many people are now using.

Like our normal AGM meetings, we ask those wishing to attend the AGM, to register. The free version of Zoom that we will be using is restricted to 100 participants so only those who register will be sent a password to enable them to join the AGM meeting.

To register for the AGM on the 15th April please email me at acheester@gmail.com and I will email you the URL link and password

For those of you who are new to Zoom and want to attend the AGM I have provided information to help you set up Zoom on your device - your computer (Windows/Mac), tablets and Smartphones (Android/iOS)

To prepare a Desktop/laptop (Windows/Mac) and download and install the Zoom Application:
  • Go to https://zoom.us/download and from the Download Center, click on the Download button under “Zoom Client For Meetings”.
  • Once the download is complete, proceed with installing the Zoom application onto your computer.

I suggest you use your normal email address when signing up for the free account, but come up with a new password for your new free Zoom account

To prepare your mobile devices do the following
For Android devices go to Play Store and download the app “Zoom Cloud Meeting”
For iPad/iPhone devices go to App Store and download the app “Zoom Cloud Meeting”

To learn how to use Zoom to join a meeting and see how it operates, click the link below to launch a 9 min Youtube video on “How to join a meeting for the 1st time”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9isp3qPeQ0E

Note: another limitation is that the meeting time can only run for 40 min, so I will open the Zoom meeting room at 10.45am, but will not start the meeting until 11am.

I will also schedule a 2nd session to start at 11.45am so if we need more time we can use the 2nd  session

Solid State Drive Installation
If your PC has a slooow hard disk drive have we an offer for you!
George Barna is willing to replace a laptop hard disk drive with a Solid State Drive (SSD) and transfer all your data for $45 plus the cost of the SSD. It will cost slightly more for the same 'surgery' on a Desktop PC as George will need to visit your home. All proceeds will go to Wellington SeniorNet.

SSDs are considerably faster than a hard drive, very reliable and have come down significantly in price. However, simply replacing your hard disk drive with a SSD will not fix any operational problems you are currently having. The content of the new drive will be identical to your current drive, including any problems with software, viruses etc.

If you are interested contact George at  georgebarna0@gmail.com  to find out what is involved. Please put SSDInstallation in the subject line when emailing George.
New 'Links' Page
We have a new button at the top of the page. Clicking on LINKS takes you to links to other web sites which we hope will be of interest to members. Currently these are the Super Gold Card, Age Concern, Office for Seniors and Power Switch but others will be added over time.
All courses, workshops and tutorials are for financial members only. To become a member, please see our joining page.

It is both free and a very good player. Google it if you like, download it to have a play before and after Allan’s session.

Allan’s demo, may not take up the whole session so bring along your so far unseen (by Digicammers at SeniorNet) pics and videos taken before, and after, our NZ lockdown. I will have an adaptor for your SD card; if you have these sorted on to a USB flash Drive… no problem.

Whatsapp is widely used for instant communications, one to one or in groups. It is easy to set up for sending photos (up to 30 can be attached in one message), videos, PDF documents and internet links as well as location sharing. In addition it can used for voice communication and video face to face chats. Whatsapp is typically used to interact in family groups, dinner outings and many social groups.  All that is required is a smartphone with a mobile number and use of wifi.

Google Photos provides free unlimited cloud storage for users to back up their photos. The app has built in artificial intelligence to recognise faces, objects, documents and places. Users can also retrospectively insert geographic location on old photos with the assistance of other supporting apps. For users who take a lot of photos or have a huge stash of family photos to backup google photos is another must-have app.

The Help Centre tutors can assist members who are new to computers or wish to improve their skills or are having problems with their portable device.

We offer one-to-one assistance in a cheerful, friendly environment and while we don’t have all the answers we can usually point you in the right direction.

We can help with a number of computing devices such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, Apple Macs, iPads. You can use the computers at SeniorNet or bring your own.

If you bring your own device please make sure the battery is fully charged or bring the power cord. It is very important that you bring all the passwords for your device.
